Mercedes downplays Antonelli title favouritism
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says it is "too early" to favour Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 F1 title despite his lead.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team is not yet ready to back Kimi Antonelli as their primary title contender. Team Principal Toto Wolff stated it is "too early" to make such a decision. Kimi Antonelli currently leads the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship with 219 points. He has secured six race victories, including five consecutive wins, and three additional podium finishes. Wolff commented on the influence of costs, saying, "That all has an influence." He clarified that decisions are not tied to specific events like the upcoming return to Malaysia. Instead, they focus on upgrade timing. Wolff stated, "It's not related to Malaysia, it's more about when can we bring the upgrades – but we are.", according to Motorsport Week.
Looking Ahead to Zandvoort
The season resumes with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. The first session is scheduled for Friday, August 21, at 13:30 Finnish time. This is a sprint weekend. Mercedes aims to maximise performance at each event. Wolff concluded, "So, we just have to continue to maximise every single day from Friday onwards to Sunday, and then hopefully at the end that will be enough.". The team prioritises consistent execution across all weekends to maintain their championship leads.
