Tsolov's Madring struggles tighten Formula 2 championship

Nikola Tsolov endured a challenging weekend at the Madring street circuit, failing to score any points and consequently seeing his lead in the Formula 2 drivers' championship drastically reduced. This marked only the second time this season that the championship leader did not register a single point, according to Feeder Series.

Tsolov's Difficult Weekend Unfolds

Tsolov began the Madring weekend with promise, setting the fastest time in Friday's practice session. However, the subsequent qualifying session saw Dino Beganovic secure his second pole position of the year. Ritomo Miyata claimed his maiden sprint race victory, while Beganovic converted his pole into a feature race win, highlighting a competitive field at the new circuit.

Despite starting sixth in the sprint race, Tsolov's hopes for points were dashed on lap 14 when he brushed the barrier at Turn 20, spinning out and retiring from fifth position. This incident allowed his championship rivals, particularly Rafael Câmara, to gain ground. The feature race offered an opportunity for redemption, with Tsolov starting from a more advantageous fifth position.

However, his fortunes did not improve; after an early pit stop, Tsolov found himself caught in traffic behind Mari Boya. An aggressive move at Turn 5 on lap 17 resulted in him overshooting his braking point, leading to contact with Câmara at Turn 7 upon rejoining the track. This collision damaged Tsolov's front-left endplate, and further damage late in the race relegated him to an 18th-place finish, concluding a dismal weekend. This result extends Tsolov's podium drought to three consecutive rounds.

Championship Battle Intensifies

Before the Budapest round, Tsolov had maintained a 50 percent win ratio in feature races, demonstrating his previous dominance. However, his recent form has seen him collect only 16 points over the last three rounds, a stark contrast to Câmara's 45 points during the same period, as reported by Feeder Series. This significant shift in performance has eroded what was once a substantial advantage.

As a direct consequence of his scoreless weekend, Tsolov's championship lead has shrunk considerably. He now sits on 167 points, with Gabriele Minì closing to 147 points and Rafael Câmara just behind on 145 points. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, despite his strong Formula 1 performances with eight wins and leading the F1 drivers' championship with 219 points, is not competing in Formula 2 this season. This tightening of the F2 standings sets the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the 2026 season, with only four rounds remaining after Madring, leaving the championship wide open for multiple contenders.
