F2 title fight tightens approaching inaugural Madrid race

Formula 2 heads to the brand-new Madring circuit in Madrid this weekend, marking its debut at the purpose-built venue for the latter half of the 2026 season. The Madring, which combines street and permanent track sections, presents a unique challenge to drivers, featuring fast, flowing corners and blind entries. While Formula 1 teams have conducted tests there and Formula 3 held its in-season test, the specific conditions and expectations for Formula 2 remain largely unknown.

Championship Standings Tighten

Nikola Tsolov currently leads the Formula 2 drivers' championship with 167 points, but his advantage has significantly narrowed. Rodin Câmara now holds second place with 145 points, while Gabriel Minì sits in third with 147 points, according to Motorsport Week. The gap between Tsolov and Câmara is now just 22 points, marking a substantial reduction from earlier in the season.

Câmara has displayed strong form in recent rounds, securing his fifth pole position of the season and finishing second in the Monza Feature Race. Conversely, Tsolov has not appeared on the podium since the Spa Feature Race, which occurred before the summer break, suggesting a shift in momentum. Minì, who led the championship through the first half of the season, has struggled to maintain his early pace in recent rounds, causing him to fall to third in the standings.

Madring Debut Poses Challenges

Drivers will have only one 45-minute practice session to familiarize themselves with the new Madring circuit before qualifying later in the afternoon. This limited track time will be crucial for understanding the circuit's characteristics, which drivers have compared to elements of the Hungaroring and Jeddah Corniche Circuit. With four rounds remaining in the 2026 season, the championship remains open, as multiple drivers still have a realistic chance to contend for the title. The inaugural race in Madrid could therefore prove pivotal in shaping the final outcome of the championship battle.
