James Wharton, a Prema Racing driver, has made a complete recovery from a lung injury suffered during the Formula 3 season opener in Melbourne; he now intends to compete in the remaining rounds of the 2026 championship. The Australian sustained a pneumothorax, commonly known as a collapsed lung, following a significant collision in the sprint race at Albert Park, an incident which led to his withdrawal from the subsequent feature race. This injury significantly impacted his early season aspirations, as confirmed by reports at the time, according to Feeder Series.
Overcoming Adversity
The incident occurred during the Melbourne sprint race when Wharton collided with his teammate Louis Sharp, resulting in a violent impact against the Turn 5 barrier, according to Feeder Series. Despite his immediate focus on returning to competition, medical professionals advised against it, preventing him from participating in the feature race. This was a difficult moment for Wharton, who reportedly expressed frustration at being sidelined during what he considered a pivotal year in his career. However, the proximity of the Melbourne circuit to his hometown, Bundoora, proved beneficial, enabling him to recover at home with his family rather than returning to his residence in Milan, Italy.
Before the crash, Wharton had demonstrated promising pace, qualifying eighth, just 0.434 seconds behind polesitter Théophile Naël. He started the reverse-grid sprint race from fifth, positioning him well for a potential top-three finish before the collision with Sharp on lap eight. With 11 Formula 1 rounds already completed and the championship leaders N. Tsolov in F2 and F. Slater in F3 accumulating substantial points, Wharton’s focus now shifts to maximizing his performance in the remaining F3 races.
