Ugochukwu claims F3 title as Taponen wins season finale

Ugo Ugochukwu has secured the 2026 Formula 3 Drivers' Championship, with his second-place finish in the season's final feature race guaranteeing him the title over Freddie Slater, who finished eighth.

Ugochukwu's Championship Triumph

Campos Racing's Ugo Ugochukwu entered the final Formula 3 race of the 2026 season tied on points with title rival Freddie Slater, necessitating a strong performance to secure the championship; ultimately, his second-place finish provided the necessary advantage. Feeder Series reported that Slater, starting eighth, lost a position to Yevan David at the opening corner, dropping to ninth, while Ugochukwu's teammate Ernesto Rivera also exerted pressure on him. Ugochukwu maintained his position directly behind the race leader, Tuukka Taponen, throughout much of the event, successfully fending off challenges and ensuring his championship victory. Slater momentarily improved his position by overtaking David for eighth on lap five, but this was insufficient to challenge Ugochukwu's championship aspirations, particularly after a late-race safety car compression did not alter the top positions significantly.

Taponen Dominates Final Race

Tuukka Taponen of MP Motorsport delivered a commanding performance in the final Formula 3 feature race of 2026, controlling the event from pole position to secure a decisive victory and third place in the drivers' standings. Feeder Series detailed Taponen's excellent start, where he immediately covered Ugochukwu into Turn 1, maintaining his lead throughout the 19-lap race. Despite a DRS train forming behind him and Ugochukwu momentarily dropping out of DRS range on lap 11, Taponen maintained a comfortable gap. A safety car intervention on lap 17, prompted by Hiyu Yamakoshi stopping on track, led to a single-lap shootout; however, Taponen expertly managed the restart, preserving his lead to cross the finish line first. His victory not only marked a strong end to his season but also elevated him to third in the championship standings with 75 points, behind Ugochukwu's 122 and Slater's 130 points.

Shifting Dynamics in the Mid-Pack

Beyond the championship battle and race victory, the final Formula 3 feature race saw some strategic manoeuvres and changes within the top ten. Alessandro Giusti moved into sixth place from Enzo Deligny on the opening lap at Turn 1, demonstrating early race aggression. Feeder Series reported that on lap 16, Yevan David experienced a significant wobble exiting Turn 18, allowing Ernesto Rivera to advance into ninth position. These mid-pack skirmishes, though not impacting the title outcome, illustrated the competitive nature of the field until the very last lap of the season.
