Suninen poised for ERC title at Rali Ceredigion
Finnish driver Teemu Suninen could secure the European Rally Championship title this weekend in Wales, leading Andrea Mabellini.

Finnish Driver Nearing Championship Glory
Finnish rally driver Teemu Suninen stands on the precipice of clinching the European Rally Championship (ERC) title this weekend at Rali Ceredigion in Wales. Competing with Škoda, Suninen holds a significant 25-point advantage over his closest rival, Andrea Mabellini, heading into the penultimate round of the 2026 season.
The championship standings reveal Suninen's dominance, with Andrea Mabellini trailing in second, and reigning champion Miko Marczyk a further 14 points behind, making Mabellini Suninen's primary competitor for the title. Both Suninen and Mabellini have already utilized their single dropped score for the seven-round season following retirements at the Royal Rally of Scandinavia, simplifying the points calculation. With 30 points awarded for a rally win and an additional five points for a Power Stage victory, Suninen needs to outscore Mabellini by 11 points at Rali Ceredigion to secure the championship with one round remaining.
Ceredigion Challenge for Suninen
Despite his strong position, the Rali Ceredigion presents a unique challenge for Suninen, who has never competed in the event previously. In contrast, Andrea Mabellini has contested the rally twice, securing a second-place finish in 2024 and would have placed fourth last year had it not been for a two-minute penalty, giving him valuable experience on the Welsh stages. DirtFish reports that this lack of prior experience for Suninen could be a factor in the outcome. Furthermore, five-time WRC winner Kris Meeke will also be competing in Ceredigion, driving a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, the same car that brought him victory in Donegal, and although a rookie to the event like Suninen, Meeke’s established pace is undeniable.
Team and Competitor Landscape
Team MRF Tyres will field a strong line-up, including Simone Tempestini in a Škoda, Erik Cais in a Hyundai, and Martin Vlček also in a Hyundai, adding further competition to the event. British championship contenders such as Osian Pryce and Meirion Evans, both driving Toyotas, alongside Max McRae in a Škoda, are also expected to feature prominently. Jakub Matulka, Philip Allen, and Pierre Ragues are among other notable entrants, while William Creighton will be absent after his accident at the Barum Rally Zlín last month.
Strategic Approach to the Title
Suninen, however, is not allowing the championship pressure to influence his approach to this crucial round. According to DirtFish, he plans to execute a “normal rally,” emphasizing a cautious strategy in certain sections. He expressed confidence in facing Mabellini in Portugal for the decider at Rally Fafe should the title not be sealed in Wales, stating his readiness for any competitor. Suninen also acknowledged the unpredictable nature of rallying, stressing the importance of being clever and securing valuable points in the UK to simplify the championship task. This strategic outlook suggests that while the opportunity is present, Suninen remains focused on a sensible, points-scoring drive rather than an all-out charge for victory at Rali Ceredigion. With four rounds remaining in the WRC season, Finnish driver Esapekka Lappi currently sits sixth in the standings with 25 points, highlighting the continued strong presence of Finnish talent in top-tier rallying. The next F1 race will be the Italian Grand Prix, with the first session commencing on Friday, September 4th, at 13:30 Finnish time.
