Ogier reassesses Pajari's WRC title prospects
Sébastien Ogier, the reigning World Rally Champion, has revised his assessment of Toyota teammate Sami Pajari, following the Finnish driver's recent successes.

Sébastien Ogier, the reigning World Rally Champion, has admitted to previously doubting the abilities of his Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team (TGR WRT) teammate, Sami Pajari, according to RallyJournal. However, Pajari's recent sequence of three consecutive victories has prompted a re-evaluation from the veteran. This comes as the Finnish driver strengthens his position as a genuine title contender in the 2026 World Rally Championship season.
Pajari's Ascent and Ogier's Initial Reservations
Pajari, the 2021 Junior WRC champion and 2024 WRC2 winner, joined Toyota's Rally1 lineup a year ago, having previously contested three rallies in a GR Yaris Rally1 car. He secured his inaugural top-class podium in Japan last autumn, finishing third; however, his initial performances were characterized by steady progression rather than immediate dominance. The objective for Pajari during this period was to accumulate experience and mileage before incrementally increasing his pace on more familiar events. Pajari endured a challenging start to the current season at Rally Monte Carlo, yet his subsequent performances have been remarkably strong.
Unprecedented Winning Streak
Pajari has achieved an unprecedented feat by winning the three most recent WRC rallies: Rally Estonia, Rally Finland, and Rally Paraguay. This marks the first instance of a driver securing the first three WRC victories of their career consecutively. His victory in Estonia was particularly convincing, while his subsequent wins demonstrated consistent performance and error-free driving, capitalizing when other contenders faced issues. This consistent finishing and opportunistic approach underscore a crucial aspect of rally competition, where merely completing stages is often a prerequisite for success.
Revised Outlook on Championship Contention
In an interview with DirtFish, as reported by RallyJournal, Ogier acknowledged that he had not always perceived the exceptional talent now evident in the 24-year-old Finn. Ogier stated, "To be honest, he had quite a difficult year and a half. I also thought something was missing." He further elaborated that, from his perspective, Pajari might not have been showcasing enough. However, the recent victories provide undeniable evidence of Pajari's capabilities. Ogier congratulated Pajari and co-driver Marko Salminen, acknowledging their current status as genuine championship contenders. Pajari currently sits second in the drivers' standings with 171 points, trailing Elfyn Evans with 201 points, with four rounds remaining in the season.
