Early career and WRC debut
Jari-Matti Latvala began driving at eight years old. He received a Ford Escort from his father, Jari Latvala, a 1994 national Group N champion. At ten, Latvala practiced with an Opel Ascona on a frozen lake.
Latvala's WRC debut occurred at the 2002 Rally Great Britain, aged 17. He finished 17th in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI. In 2003, he competed in four WRC events with a Ford Focus WRC. His best result was tenth at both the Acropolis Rally and Rally Great Britain.
During 2004, Latvala primarily drove an S1600 class Junior World Rally Championship car. He achieved a 21st overall finish at the Tour de Corse with a Group N Subaru Impreza WRX STI. In 2005, Latvala competed in nine WRC events. He drove a Group N Impreza in six and a World Rally Car in three. He secured 16th overall three times: at the Swedish Rally in a Toyota Corolla WRC, and at the Tour de Corse and Rally d'Italia Sardegna in the Impreza.
Latvala contested 11 WRC rallies in 2006. He drove a Subaru Impreza WRX STI in six, a Ford Focus WRC in four, and a Toyota Corolla WRC at Rally Finland. He won the Production Car World Rally Championship (PCWRC) class and finished sixth overall at Telstra Rally Australia. He secured another PCWRC win and an eighth overall finish at Propecia Rally New Zealand. His career-best result that season was fourth overall at Rally Great Britain in the Focus WRC, placing him 13th in the drivers' championship.
Ascension and peak performance
In 2007, Latvala completed a full 16-event season for Stobart M-Sport Ford. He secured his first stage win on SS5 at Rally Norway. He then achieved his first podium finish at the 2007 Rally Ireland.
Latvala joined the Ford factory team in 2008 as the second driver alongside Mikko Hirvonen. He retired from the season's opening round. At the 2008 Swedish Rally, Latvala won his first WRC event. This made him the youngest WRC winner at 22 years old. He led the 2008 Rally México for the first day, ultimately finishing third despite a turbo malfunction and road-sweeping duties.
Despite a challenging start to the 2009 season, including a significant crash in Portugal, Latvala secured his second WRC victory at Rally Sardinia. He led the event from start to finish. In 2010, Latvala remained with the Ford factory team. He finished third at the Swedish Rally and second at Rally Jordan. He took a dramatic win at Rally New Zealand and secured his second victory of the season at Rally Finland. He concluded the season in second place overall, behind Sébastien Loeb.
In 2012, Latvala was promoted to Ford's lead driver. He won the Swedish Rally, his first victory as the team's number one. Latvala joined the new Volkswagen WRC team for 2013, citing Ford's withdrawal as a key factor. He won at Greece and achieved seven podium finishes, placing third in the championship. In 2014, Latvala won four rallies: Sweden, Argentina, Finland, and Alsace. He secured eight podiums and finished second overall to teammate Sébastien Ogier. In 2015, he won three events: Portugal, Finland, and Corsica. He added four second-place finishes, again ranking second in the championship behind Ogier. His final WRC victory came at Rally Mexico in 2016, where he also finished second in Italy and Finland, ending the season sixth overall.
